The I-805 HOV/Carroll Canyon Road Extension Project included the extension of Carroll Canyon Road under I-805, construction of two miles of High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes in each direction along I-805 from I-5 to Carroll Canyon Road, and construction of a northerly Direct Access Ramp from the Carroll Canyon Road Extension to the HOV lanes. AECOM retained PB&A to design the Permanent Retaining Walls for the excavation that would create the roadway for the Direct Access Ramp. PB&A had used Soil Nail Design previously for a retaining wall on the I-15 in San Diego County and gained Caltrans approval for this much larger project. The use of the Soil Nails cut $25 million dollars off the construction cost of the Direct Access Road alone. This project won the 2017 APWA Transportation Award.
