Soldier Beam & Tie-Back

Proven long-term solutions for deep excavations.

Soldier beam and tie-back walls consist of vertical steel beams (soldiers) with horizontal lagging between them, anchored back into the soil with prestressed tie-backs. This system is ideal for deep excavations where deformation control is critical.

WHERE IT WORKS BEST

KEY BENEFITS

  • High-rise building basements

  • Transit stations

  • Below-grade parking structures

  • Adjacent to sensitive structures

  • Excellent deformation control

  • Suitable for deep excavations

  • Can be designed as permanent or temporary

  • Adaptable to various soil conditions

EXAMPLES

Deep excavation engineering for the La Brea station, part of the LA Metro expansion.

LA Metro Westside Purple Line Extension
LOS ANGELES, CA

PB&A served as Engineer of Record (EOR) for the temporary Support of Excavation for four underground stations comprising the Purple Line Extension. This high-speed rail alternative connects commuters traveling between downtown Los Angeles, the Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills, and Westwood. The design was complicated by the requirement to keep Wilshire Blvd. open as a live thoroughfare over the excavations. PB&A designed concrete decking panels to maintain vehicular and pedestrian traffic while excavation took place beneath.
